How to Keep Food Cold Longer When Camping
Smart packing, temperature management and cooler habits that help protect your food and stretch your cold supply in the backcountry.
Start cold, not warm. Chill drinks and food before they enter the cooler, and freeze anything that can safely thaw during the trip. Every warm item added to a cooler consumes part of its cooling capacity.
Organize food by meal and keep frequently used drinks separate when possible. Every lid opening exchanges cold air for warm air. Shade also matters: keep your cooler out of direct sun and away from hot vehicle surfaces.
For perishable food, use a refrigerator thermometer and follow current food-safety guidance for safe storage temperatures. When in doubt about food that has spent too long warm, discard it rather than taking a chance.
